Sr. Financial Analyst

Job Description Summary

This role will require you to lead on Utilities finance functions including budgeting activities forecasts, accruals and variance activities. It will also require you to support the Director of the E&S on the utility procurement functions. This role will have people management responsibilities and will manage a team of two analysts. This role would also be responsible for supporting a wider team with data analysis and reports to support energy management and sustainability functions.
This role will work to ensure that the client has the best information and recommendations with which to make energy management and sustainability decisions. This position will work closely with the operations team including, facilities managers, building engineers, building operating engineers, and vendors to ensure a seamless delivery of these services.

Job Description

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Functions as the in-house expert on utilities finance. Acts as the liaison between various vendors, utility suppliers and CW’s finance team.

  • Work with the team of analysts to prepare budgets and monthly variance reports for utilities.

  • Be able to assist on Utilities Procurement activities such as hedging strategies/ rate analysis etc.

  • Ensures data reliability and completeness of utility data (electricity, gas, water, waste).

  • Build robust processes around utility management and are responsible for developing/ improving the current processes.

  • Be able to work with various stakeholders (internal and external) to resolve any data and cost discrepancies.

  • Understands building energy consumption profiles. Assists in developing site energy and water profiles.

  • Facilitates the maintenance and reporting of energy, water and waste benchmarks and performance metrics. Is familiar with industry benchmarks including Energy Star Portfolio Manager.

  • Ability to use building data to identify cost and usage drivers,

  • Troubleshoots utilities issues for, but not limited to, account transfers, identification of site/team that invoice needs to be redirected to, support with new construction contracts, addressing discrepancies with delinquencies and double payments, and setup of new utility accounts.

  • Maintain dashboards in Google Plx and Google Data Studio to increase visibility and engagement with client in tracking utility performance over time

  • Maintain energy management software, EnergyCAP, by supporting data structure configuration, ongoing loading of utility data and energy projects, and periodic data quality reviews

  • Develop metrics to normalize use and cost reporting for headcount growth, densification, and space use to understand buildings’ and portfolio’s performance over time and accurately benchmark across portfolio

  • Demonstrate ability to work positively with customers, fellow employees, outside contractors and vendors alike

  • Performs other related duties as required or requested

  • Attend classes periodically related to position to improve knowledge and skills

SKILLS and QUALIFICATIONS

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s/ Master’s degree in Finance/ Economics/ Environmental / Energy with focus on Finance and Energy and Utilities markets

Essential Skills

  • Requires knowledge of financial terms and principles

  • Requires experience working in the Utilities industry. Experience / Knowledge of the procurement/ hedging etc. would be an advantage

  • Ability to grasp, analyze, and interpret documents. Ability to solve problems involving several options in situations. Requires intermediate analytical and quantitative skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills.

  • Ability to provide efficient, timely, reliable and courteous service to customers.

  • Ability to effectively present information.

  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of the use, setup and operation of Windows-based computers and desktop applications such as MS-Word, MS-Excel and MS-PowerPoint

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years of experience in managing utilities/financial data management/analytics,

  • Experience working within Utilities procurement is desired.

  • Experience with energy /sustainability would be beneficial

  • Experience with time series data and common tools to work with data, i.e. combination of spreadsheets (Google Sheets or Excel) and presentation/dashboard tools would be an advantage

  • 1-2 years of people management experience;

  • Specialized knowledge / skills:

    • Must be diligent with data quality and speed for project deliveries

    • Ability to create client-ready slides, reports and visualizations

    • Requires good communication skills, both verbal and written

    • Must possess a high level of accuracy and neatness

    • Experience with data logging and analysis

    • Proficient in Sheets/Excel (advanced level – macros, queries, pivots, etc)

    • Understanding of the construction and/or building operations industry

    • Experience with business intelligence applications (Google Data Studio, Plx, Tableau, Power BI, SQL, etc) would be an advantage

    • Experience with time series data and common tools to work with data, i.e. combination of spreadsheets (Google Sheets or Excel) and presentation/dashboard tools would be an advantage

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ENVIRONMENTAL WORK CONDITIONS:

  • This job operates in a professional dynamic office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and printers. It is a fluid environment in terms of daily location. Must be flexible to work from various locations and types of office space.

  • Involves work of a general office nature; typically includes extended periods of sitting and/or operation of a computer for up to 8 hours a day

  • Regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to write and type.

  • Ability to speak clearly so others can understand you.

  • Ability to read and comprehend information and ideas presented orally and in writing.

  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in writing and orally so others will understand.

  • Regularly required to utilize vision abilities, allowing reading of printed material, graphics, and computer displays.
