Associate Director for Residential Education – Student Living

The Associate Director for Residential Education reports to the Director for Residential Education and works with the Director for Residential Education to provide leadership and supervision of the department’s day-to-day residential education processes, supervision, and initiatives, student conduct, student leadership development, and computer-based programs associated with community engagement to contribute to the overall health, well-being, and success of CSU residential students.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Residential Education & Engagement:

  • Oversee day-to-day residential education operations, ensuring efficient systems are in place to meet professional standards for timely and sensitive response to students’, families’, and CSU community members’ questions, concerns, and requests for information regarding policies, education, conduct, and engagement.
  • Provide guidance and oversight to Residential Education staff to support their success in meeting and exceeding engagement, education, and programming requirements – progressively working to meet student experience needs.
  • Provide primary and significant leadership in creating and implementing proactive strategies to promote student holistic well-being, academic success, and community development in a residential setting that includes the development of a robust curricular approach to residential education.
  • Serve as a member of university task forces/initiatives aimed at enhancing the residential experience and retention of first year and sophomore students.
  • Oversee the roommate conflict mediation process and work in conjunction with Director for Residential Education and the Director for Housing Operations, or their designee, with the management of the residential room change process.
  • Communicate with the department leadership team to discuss residential education, planning, and office needs.
  • Serve as a primary user of the RoomPact system, ensuring that staff are appropriately trained and using the system as intended.
  • Serve as the department liaison to Women’s Center, Campus Engagement and Involvement, Veteran Student Success Programs, LGBTQ+ Student Services, and The Pratt Center, Lift Up Vikes.
  • Represent the Department of Residence Life and Housing on the University Programming Committee.

Student Leadership Development:

  • Serve as Advisor to the Residence Hall Association and ensure its ongoing growth and development.
  • Establish and ensure the development and advisement of National Residence Hall Honorary, and Residence Hall Programming Board.
  • Develop and coordinate executive board member training for all departmental student organizations in conjunction with the Presidents of reach respective organization.
  • Coordinate Community Council Advisor training for Community Directors who will serve in that capacity for their respective residential communities.
  • Ensure student organizations adhere to departmental, CSU, and Student Organizational policies and procedures

Resident Conduct and CARE:

  • Serve as a conduct officer for the department, ensuring staff’s efficient and educational approach to responding to community violations and effectively administering the resident conduct process in collaboration with Community Standards and Advocacy. Serve as the primary resident conduct officer in the absence of the Director for Residential Education.
  • Serve on the CARE Team with the Director for Residential Education and attend High Risk Group Meetings, assigning follow up to staff members as needed, and keeping department leadership informed of significant student and community concerns and impacts.

Staff Supervision:

  • Recruit, train, and directly supervise four professional live-in Community Directors and the Residential Education Office Assistants. Hold regular one-on-one meetings with direct reports, attend weekly department staff meetings, and provide appropriate on-boarding and professional development opportunities for staff as needed.
  • Indirectly supervise four graduate level live-in Assistant Community Directors.
  • Oversee the recruitment, selection, and placement processes for Resident Assistants and Community Assistants.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of comprehensive training and development programs for paraprofessional staff. Ensure the on-going supervision and support of paraprofessional staff.
  • Ensure staff training that leads to the successful facilitation of residential communities that support students’ development of multicultural understanding, and cross-cultural relationships.
  • Provide and support staff recognition initiatives and promote professional development opportunities.
  • Oversee student staff payroll in collaboration with the Director for Residential Education.

Student Support:

  • Advise students and family members in decision-making and provide resource referrals to help support student success and well-being.
  • Provide and support student recognition initiatives and promote leadership opportunities.
  • Provide timely and sensitive response, outreach, and relationship building for students of concern as needed.

Department and Divisional Leadership:

  • Serve on the director on-call team on a rotating basis to support residential education staff responding to emergency situations during the evening and weekend hours as determined by the Executive Director of Residence Life and Housing and/or the Director for Residential Education. Consult with university staff concerning serious or problematic situations as needed.
  • Assist with crisis management and emergency situations in residential communities; work collaboratively with Residence Life and Housing staff, AVP/Dean of Students, Campus Police, Health & Wellness, and Counseling Center as needed.
  • Be accessible, visible, and present for relevant/occasional university speakers and athletics events; attend staff/student-planned community development activities and educational events as appropriate.
  • Assist in leading task forces, presenting training topics, and executing departmental and CSU projects as needed.
  • Represent the department in new student recruitment and orientation events.
  • Respect and maintain confidentiality, parameters of operation, professional protocols, and individual privacy.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or their designee.

Required Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in higher education, counseling, student affairs administration, business management, or other relevant field or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in residence life and housing that include crisis management, facilities and housing operations, student advising, program planning, and supervision of student staff.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, mentoring, and motivating a diverse professional staff team.
  • Demonstrated experience building collaborative partnerships with faculty, administrators, students, parents/families, and campus partners.
  • Detail-oriented and self-motivated with ability to work independently, as a leader, and a collaborative member of a team.
  • Sensitive, diplomatic, detail-oriented, and articulate written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to implement problem solving strategies to manage everyday residential challenges such as crisis response, conflict management, community development, and student/family concerns in a fast-paced environment.
  • A demonstrated commitment and passion for professional growth in the areas of student learning and development, community development, supporting students’ well-being, and best practices in residence life programs and operations.
  • Knowledge of equity and inclusion issues and laws that impact higher education and particularly community living (all gender spaces, Title IX, affinity-based living learning communities, ADA compliance).
  • Demonstrated commitment to expand knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, understanding cultural differences, social identities, and historical inequalities, and strategies for interacting effectively with people different from oneself.
  • Demonstrated experience using an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens in delivering programs and services practice (i.e., staffing practices, supervision, training, housing policies, programs, and services)
  • Availability on weekends and evenings as needed.
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing or working within a Residential Curricular Approach
  • Ability to navigate THD (The Housing Director), RoomPact or their equivalents.
  • Understanding of emerging issues in higher education, particularly in student affairs and residence life and housing.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze and display information in ways that are easy to interpret and spot patterns, trends and correlations. Examples of these representations include charts, graphs, infographics, and other pictorial diagrams.
  • Demonstrated skills in public speaking, facilitating conversations, and presenting to families, students, staff and other constituents.
  • Involvement in local, regional, and national organizations supporting the mission of Housing, as well as in the field of student affairs (such as ACUHO-I, ACPA, and NASPA).

The salary range for this position is $68,000 – $72,000

Compensation is based on geographic location and individual pay decisions will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.

Corporate Positions: In addition to the base salary, may be eligible for an annual performance bonus that is based on individual and company performance.

Onsite Property Positions: In addition to the base salary, may be eligible for a discretionary weekly, monthly and/or quarterly bonus based on budget.
